It's a Tuesday night. I open Bumble. Three new matches from the spotlight I set two hours ago. One Ukrainian, one Portuguese, one Brazilian who just moved to Gaia.
I don't swipe. Haven't swiped in months.
I've been using dating apps in Portugal for over three years. Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, Happn, and a few others I forgot the names of. Spent thousands of euros. Gone on hundreds of dates. And I've worked out what actually gets results.
This is not a top 10 list. This is what happened when I stopped treating dating apps like a slot machine and started treating them like a system.
What I use and what I pay
Real numbers. Because nobody else gives you these.
Bumble: highest tier plus 30 spotlights. Around €80 a month. The spotlights fire at primetime automatically. I come back to matches waiting in my inbox.
Tinder: Gold plus five primetime boosts. Around €60 a month.
Total: €140 to €160 depending on the month.
That's less than dinner for two at any decent restaurant in Porto. For that money I get a stream of women reaching out every week. I still do cold approaches at bars too. But if you don't have a problem with spending, this is the way.
Bumble
Bumble is where the serious women live.
Filters wide open at 18 to 38, I got about 20 matches a week. Ten would actually talk. Two became dates.
Then I narrowed it to 22 to 28. One date every two weeks. Partly because Porto is not a big city and I've been through the pool.
Starting fresh with a new account and wide filters, expect 20 matches a week easy. Two solid dates.
The thing about Bumble in Portugal. The women are mostly over 30. Mostly expats. Mostly looking for something long term. Ukrainians love Bumble. So do other Eastern Europeans.
And they tell you exactly what they want. Date one.
"What are you looking for?"
"I already had my fun phase. Now I want something serious."
"Tell me about your family."
"How much do you make?"
One girl on a third date at my place looked around and asked, "You bought this apartment?"
All Bumble women.
Doesn't make them bad. Makes them focused. If that's what you want, Bumble is the app for you.
If you're not looking for that right now, it's going to feel like a job interview with wine.
Tinder
Tinder is the opposite energy.
Younger women. More Brazilians. More Portuguese. A surprising number of Russians. The 22 to 28 range lives on Tinder in Portugal.
I get 20 to 30 likes a week. Pick about 15 to message. Two become dates.
Women on Tinder are more fun. Even the ones who want something real take it easy about it. Less pressure. Less cross-examination. More "let's grab a drink and see what happens."
Bumble is LinkedIn for dating. Tinder is still a bar at midnight.
Happn
Most people forget this app exists.
Happn matches you with people you physically crossed paths with. Your gym. Your café. Your street.
I found a Brazilian woman on Happn over three years ago. We're still seeing each other. Good girl. Great sex. It started because an app told me we'd walked past each other somewhere in Porto.
The pool is tiny. You won't get flooded with matches. But Happn catches women the other apps miss completely. Someone who lives two streets over and never showed up on Tinder.
Keep it installed. Check it once a week. You might find the best one there.
Hinge
Hinge tries to be the smart app. Conversation prompts. Detailed profiles. "Designed to be deleted."
In Portugal it barely has a user base. I ran it for months and it never came close to what Bumble or Tinder gave me. Maybe it works in London or New York. In Porto, don't bother.
What actually makes a difference
Photos
Get a photographer. A real one. Not your friend with an iPhone.
I did a session with a 50mm lens. On a bridge in Porto. The Yeatman balcony with the river behind me. One with a cigar. One with my dog. One at a dinner with other founders around.
You need five or six shots that look like someone else took them. Because someone did. Show your life. Show some humor. Show that you do things besides sit in your apartment.
The guys getting zero matches are using bathroom selfies and a cropped photo from a cousin's wedding in 2019. Fix your photos before you touch anything else.
Timing
Evenings. 7 to 10 PM. That's when women are on the apps.
Set your boosts and spotlights for primetime. Don't burn money pushing your profile at 2 PM on a Wednesday when nobody's looking.
Openers
I used to send every match the same thing. "Hey. You're cute."
When you have thirty women in your inbox, that filters fast. Low effort, high volume.
Now I use Claude to help tailor the first message to each profile. Takes ten seconds per match and the response rate is noticeably higher. It reads her bio, I write something specific based on that. More effort. Better results.
Be selective
My numbers above are after filtering hard. I'm picking 8s, 9s, and 10s. Not every woman who matches. Not every one who messages first.
Most guys swipe right on everything and then wonder why their dates are disappointing. The apps give you volume. You decide the quality.
The real math
€160 a month. Two to four dates a week with women I chose.
Compare that to going out three nights a week hoping someone interesting walks in. Drinks. Ubers. Wasted evenings when nobody shows.
Some guys spend €160 on one first date and never see her again.
I spend it on all of them. And I see whoever I want.
